Focusing on the Future

Since being licensed by the FCC in 1965 as part of the Oregon Educational Broadcasting network, channel 8 has gone by many different names: The Southern Oregon Educational Company, KSYS, KFTS and, of course, SOPTV. But our desire to provide quality educational media which inspires and fuels “Learning for Life” has remained the same.
We feel that President Lyndon B. Johnson said it best in 1967 when he signed the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Act into law:“Our nation wants more than just material wealth; our nation wants more than a 'chicken in every pot.' We in America have an appetite for excellence, too. While we work every day to produce new goods and to create new wealth, we want most of all to enrich man's spirit.”
That is the purpose of Public Broadcasting: To enrich the spirits of everyone in our community, regardless of their economic or political status, by providing media that educates, inspires, informs as well as entertains.
Public Broadcasting has evolved a lot in the decades since our founding. It is no longer simply television or radio - It is now online, on-demand and on-air. It is no longer simply viewed at home – It is now viewed on-the-go and used in classrooms across our country. It no longer enriches our spirits solely through educational programs but now provides a trusted source of news and information, a venue for responsible science and a stage for intelligent entertainment.
But the evolution of Public Media in Southern Oregon is never complete, which leads to my exciting announcement.
As of January 1, 2020, we are adopting a new name for the station: Southern Oregon PBS. With our new name, we are committing ourselves to the following initiatives:
-the official launch of our 4th channel (PBS Kids).
-the unveiling of our more user-friendly and media-rich website, SOPBS.org.
Exciting things are happening here, so stay tuned and keep on “Learning For Life” with your Southern Oregon PBS Stations!
