Student Reporting Labs with the PBS NewsHour
Southern Oregon PBS has partnered with several local schools to offer a Student Reporting Lab course, which teaches students vital journalism and video skills.
What is a Student Reporting Lab?
The PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL) are classes hosted at local schools during regular school hours that teach field production skills for broadcast news. The innovative video/journalism curriculum offers mentoring by SOPBS Education Coordinator Ben Garcia, as well as local teachers and the SRL NewsHour Staff. This course elevates student voices by giving them the opportunity to have their work published on the PBS NewsHour national website, and even possibly broadcast during the NewsHour.
What are the benefits of a Student Reporting Lab?
The SRL programs develop a range life skills in students, such as critical thinking, teamwork, and collaboration. Students who complete the course demonstrate increases in their media literacy analysis skills and have a less apathetic view of news and journalism. Students also gain an increased interest in civic engagement activities particularly ones that are digital and collaborative, as well as commitment to volunteering and problem solving.
How does Student Reporting Labs happen in Southern Oregon?
In Southern Oregon, SRL engages students in schools and at the TV station. Southern Oregon PBS has partnered with several local schools to offer a Student Reporting Lab course, which teaches students vital journalism and video skills. High level students, who have finished a year of SRL in schools and show great interest in video-journalism, are invited to join the SRL club which meets three days a week at SOPBS. These students are engaged by staff at the station in the production of videos that relate to important local issues or events.

Almeda Fire Recovery 2022 - SOPBS SRL Club
The Almeda Fire ripped through two towns in Southern Oregon (Phoenix-Talent) on September 9th, displacing many families with school age children. Phoenix-Talent Schools (PTS) lost more than 700 students due to displacement and have partnered with the cities of Talent, Phoenix, and various community organizations to try to bring back many of these families and their students. This digital news short, produced by fire affected student reporters at SOPBS, investigates the status of fire recovery, especially as it relates to displaced students and families, in 2022 nearly two years after the fire.
