In the 1930’s there were three big flower festivals on the West Coast: the Pasadena Rose Parade, the Portland Rose Parade, and the Grants Pass Gladiolus Parade. The parade featured a court of princesses and a Gladiolus Queen who traveled to other town parades to advertise the region’s Gladiolus industry.

During the 1850’s Gold Rush many Chinese came to what is now Josephine County to mine gold for others. After the Rush, many Chinese workers stayed and bought gold claims from a white miner who thought them “mined out” and became wealthy by the standards of the era.
